ImageLast weekend the Lansing Fire Department hosted their annual Carnival.  Department President Robert Wagner says attendance was about average or above average, and the carnival went well.  About 30 volunteer emergency responders manned the carnival, cooking and selling food at the food pavilion, working the fire dog, selling tickets, and monitoring the event.

Recently the department voted on whether or not to continue the event.  "Some people are just getting burned out.  It's tough to get more people to work on it," Wagner says.  But enough wanted to continue the community event to continue the contract for another two years.  "I look forward to it every year," Wagner adds.

posticon Fitness: Bend, Don

ImageRight now we are in a storm of stress and depression (or so the media would have you believe). Some people are in a category 5 hurricane and some people see it as a drizzle. Whatever the level of your stress, the key to reducing the stress on your mind and body is to bend, not break.

Deepak Chopra, spiritual guru and author, writes of the law of least resistance in which you accept what the world throws at you and not let it bother you either way. It is simply acknowledging what is in your control and what is not in your control. The analogy to illustrate this is that of an oak tree and a palm tree in a huge hurricane. The oak tree is strong but inflexible and either stands firm or breaks, no in-between. The palm-tree, on the other hand, bends and sways in the storm and is left standing at the end no matter what. Stress reduction doesn't always mean making the storm go away but changing the way you react to a storm of stress by being a flexible and strong palm tree. Thus you have to yield to the stress and not break from the stress.

ImageNew York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today announced the availability of nearly $845,000 to encourage organic production in New York State. The funding is provided by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) as part of its Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

“With the growing trend of organic agriculture here in New York, we are particularly pleased that the new Farm Bill is helping farmers fund conservation practices that will in turn aid in their transition to organic production,” the Commissioner said. “Farmers who are currently in the transition process, as well as those who are certified organic, are eligible to take advantage of USDA’s EQIP Organic Initiative funding and encouraged to do so.”
