posticon Fitness: To Run Or Not To Run

ImageThe number of runners on the road multiplies incredibly this time of year thanks to improving spring weather. But you might be one of those people who run into this scenario (no pun intended): you used to be in shape but on your first time out you barely survive a mile. You are terribly discouraged at your current level of fitness and start to question why you're out there in the first place. What do you do?

The natural thing may be to tough it out, slow down to a painful trudge, and finish your run. After all, Vince Lombardi told us that "winners never quit and quitters never win." That's what you're supposed to do, right? Stay moving to burn those calories? My recommended strategy is going to fly in the face of the aerobic fat-burning myth that you have to keep moving at a low intensity. When you hit that uncomfortable and unbearable point on your run, don't slow down, just accept it and walk.

ImageThe Corporate Development Committee of Lansing Central Schools, Inc. funded the purchase of 25 heart rate monitors to be used by the Lansing High School Physical Education Department. The donation was accepted by the Board of Education on February 24th.

The heart rate monitor technology will be used to measure and evaluate students to help them gauge exercise intensity in order to meet their exercise goals. According to Carolyn Ferguson, Physical Education teacher at the High School, the students learn in PE to set their fitness goals based on the FITT principle (Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type of exercise). By having students use heart rate monitors during different activities, they can learn how much work is required to get their heart rate into their training zones in each of the activities.

While recovering from surgery earlier this year she had a chance to really reflect on what the change will mean to her.  "I started thinking very nostalgically about my time here, the relationships, the people, and my kids," she says.  "But it didn't change the fact that I am ready to make a move."
