ImageThis winter, Sciencenter visitors will get up close and personal with parasites at the new "skin-crawling" exhibition, "Attack of the Bloodsuckers!" opening during the holiday weekend on Saturday, January 17 and Monday, January 19. Examine fleas, ticks, leeches, head lice and other parasites and discover the important role they play in the ecosystem.

"This exhibition might make some squirm, but in a fun way! With more than a dozen interactive stations to explore, it's designed to keep families ‘itching for more'," said biologist Lara Kimber, the Sciencenter's Associate Director. "This exhibition is sure to spark conversation among visitors as they discover that stinky feet can lure mosquitoes, and other fascinating facts about the parasites many of us would rather swat than slow down and observe."

posticon Lansing Ranked in Top 2% Of U.S. High Schools

Print Print

ImageLansing High School was identified as one of the top high schools in the United States in a U.S. News & World Report study of 21,069 high schools across the nation.  In the pool of schools that met all required standards, the top 100 were awarded gold medal recognition and another 504 received silver medal standing.  Lansing is listed among silver medal schools, which represent only 2% of all schools considered.

"You can't achieve this type of recognition without outstanding leadership at the building level," says Lansing School Superintendent Stephen Grimm.  "You have to have a building leader that can culminate all those different ideas about what the school is all about and who we're going to serve.  This award recognizes service to all students."

If you missed the reopening of the Rogues Harbor Inn ballroom in December or the CDC Auction and Dance in October you missed the Lansing 'It' parties of the season.  One celebrated Lansing's past, and the other Lansing's future.

The Corporate Development Committee had just purchased $60,000 of technology equipment for the Lansing schools when it turned around and hosted its 12th annual auction.  They raised another $24,000.

Lansing Harbor Festival 2008!

With Ithaca Festival and the Trumansburg Grassroots Festival did Tompkins County really need another festival?  When the Lansing Community Council reconstituted a few years ago members thought the town should revive Lansing Day, a much smaller scale community event that the council had hosted for a decade in the '80s and '90s.  What they came up with, Lansing Harbor Festival, was much grander, and two years ago people wondered whether they would be able to pull it off.

The 2007 festival almost didn't happen at all when a freak storm assaulted the town, forcing organizers to scramble to reschedule a week later.  It was a testament to them and to countless community members who wanted the festival to happen and weren't going to let even an Act of God deter them.  This year's success cemented the festival's reputation and future.

Bullets Over Lansing

A Rich Heritage of Lansing Historians
Lansing is such a vital community that it would be impossible to list all the significant things people did here in 2008.  There were many notable events.  Perhaps the key event of the year for the Lansing Community Library was the hiring of a professional librarian, Susie Gutenberger.  Her hiring was the most tangible evidence that the library is for real.  Meanwhile the board of directors has been working steadily to make their provisional charter a permanent one, and to stabilize services and hours of operation.

One was a visit from the principal of a small Kenyan school half a world away.  But when William Kabbis visited Lansing it was a very big deal.  Kabbis is the Head Teacher at the Mbaka Oromo school in Kenya, the school the Partnership of African and Lansing Schools (PALS) chose to partner with four years ago.

Now that the business office has moved to its new location in the Lansing elementary school, Business Administrator Mary June King was looking for a way to fill the empty new walls.  She decided to ask the district art teachers to get involved and the first business office art show is the result.  District residents got to see the new offices and the art show in an open house December 8th.

King says she is excited to have student art representing the district as visitors come to the new offices.  She plans to rotate the works, possibly switching out the art every six weeks.  "The work is fantastic," she says.  "People come through and comment at the advanced level of talent we have."

posticon Habitat House In North Lansing

ImageSince habitat For Humanity was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976, the organization has built more than 300,000 houses in more than 90 countries around the world for more than 1.5 million people.  The houses are built largely by volunteers, one house at a time.  Next year one will be built in North Lansing.

"What we usually do is try and select a family for the house, then build the house for the family, within reason," says Tompkins County Construction Coordinator Ed Siemon.  "We're looking at plans for a three or four bedroom house, depending on how we divide it.  That's the family size we usually get involved with.  We try to make it a simple house in terms of building structure, because it will be built by volunteer labor."
