ImageUnited Way of Tompkins County's Stephen E. Garner Day of Caring was a great success!  The community generously donated nearly 3 tons of food and personal care items for sixteen, local food pantries and organizations.  A record-number of personal care items were donated this year.  Wegmans donated 450 reusable tote bags that were given to the food pantries for their consumers to use throughout the year.

Campaign Co-Chairs are Jean McPheeters, President of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Rob Mackenzie, President & CEO of Cayuga Medical Center. Both McPheeters and Mackenzie have been extremely supportive of the work of United Way and its forty-three member organizations, in addition to the two targeted areas of care; Hunger & Food Security and the Urgent Rx Prescription Program.

ImageThere was a lot going on in Lansing Saturday.  While the Lansing Family Triathlon took over the school campus, the annual municipal auction was held at the Highway Department grounds on Town Barn Road.  People came from all over to get a good deal on trucks, construction equipment, cars, and even bicycles.

The Lansing Lion's Club was at the auction, as always, providing burgers, donuts, and all manner of refreshments.  Back at the Town Hall the Girls Varsity Swim Team was barbecuing a veritable chicken massacre to raise money for the team.

Dear IMO,
My husband and I will be celebrating our 20th anniversary next week. We've had a pretty good marriage so far, but over the last two or three years our ability to communication with each other has become problematic. We don't shout or have tantrums, but there are problems in our relationship. I talk to him. He listens, but I don't think he really hears what I am saying. We went to counseling many years ago, and it helped out tremendously. I'd like to go again, but I'm afraid he won't agree? How do I approach this subject with him? What if he says "no?"

Sandy

Dear Sandy,

Marriage is the most dynamic relationship that exists. Neither of you are the same person you were 20 years ago when you stood at the altar, looked into each other's eyes, and said "I do." In a marriage change occurs slowly, usually without notice. But change happens. One day you have children, you see them off for their first day at school, and then they're off to college or out on their own. You look at each other and ask, "What happened?"

Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I work for a very small company.  Although we get along just fine, our boss has the worst case of halitosis.  Since the office is small, there is very little room to maneuver to escape the "cloud of odor" when he talks.  How do I/we get our boss to take notice of his breath without losing our job?

Sincerely,

Anne Marie.

Dear Anne Marie,

Bad breath can be annoying and irritating for those on the receiving end.  It can also be embarrassing to the individual who suffers from this condition.  For most people, bad breath is totally preventable with basic oral care.  Regular dental check-ups, brushing after meals, and flossing are usually all one needs to be free of the bacteria that cause bad breath.  Mouthwash with an antiseptic is another line of defense.

posticon Perfect Day, Perfect Festival

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of postponement could stay Lansing Harbor Festival from the swift completion of its appointed activities.  Although it was tested with all of those challenges, by 8pm last Saturday everyone agreed the festival had been a success.  After a freak storm that damaged the park and much of Lansing the previous week Mother Nature made it up to the festival by producing perfect weather one week later-- comfortable but not too warm, with a slight breeze coming in from the lake.

Despite the postponement just short of 2,000 people came to Myers Park to celebrate Lansing.  "It was lucky that you canceled, because the next day that big storm hit," said the Burns Sisters' Annie Burns.  "But today is the perfect day.  Nice crowd, too."

The Burns Sisters was the first professional band to perform on Myers Park's new bandstand, donated and built by the Lansing Lion's Club and completed just in time for the festival. "It is absolutely fantastic," Burns said. "This is so beautiful. Nice sound up there, plus you have Barney Cole doing the sound, which doesn't hurt. And what a perfect day, so we're very happy about that."

posticon $5,000 Donated in Appreciation of Lansing Education

You hear a lot about how good the Lansing school system is, with a good learning environment, high scores, and a quite high retention record.  But one family decided to put their money where their mouths are when they donated $5,000 to Lansing High School.  "They were very appreciative of the education that the girls got," says Principal Michelle Stone.  "They felt that it was important that they give something back to the school that gave the girls all of the opportunities that they had."

(Ithaca, NY)  Gadabout Transportation Services' annual fund-raising campaign is underway, with an eye toward reducing the impact of maintenance costs. The Little Yellow Bus That Can saw a 10 percent increase in the number of miles its buses traveled last year. Gadabout has never had to limit services in more than 30 years of operation and regular, effective maintenance of its fleet is one reason why.

Gadabout's goal for the 2007 fund-raising campaign is $50,000. The monies will go into the agency's operating budget of just over 1 million dollars. Contributions to the annual campaign are tax deductible.

Lansing Harbor FestivalLansing Harbor FestivalEven the weather can't keep a good festival down!  After a damaging storm forced Lansing Harbor Festival organizers to postpone the event for one week, the lineup is as exciting as ever, and this time good weather is predicted.  If you arrive at 10 AM when the festival is scheduled to begin you will be in time for the official opening at the park entrance.  WHCU's Dave Vieser will be your Master of Ceremonies for the day.

The official Lansing Harbor Festival Web site (www.lansingharborfest.org) has the most up to date information about the changed schedule.  Confirmed bands include the Lansing High School Cabaret conducted by Lucas Hibbard (10:15) AM), The Burns Sisters (2PM), Pete Panek and the Blue Cats (4 PM) and Tom Knight and the Blue Moon (6 PM).  There will be music throughout the day.

ImageLansing's Recreation Department excels in traditional offerings such as soccer, football, and skiing.  But it hasn't shied away from experimenting with less common offerings to service Lansing residents who have different interests.  Karate was a surprise success that led to a vital ongoing program.  Others haven't been as successful, but that doesn't stop Recreation Director Steve Colt from exploring more new ideas.

This year's surprise hit was cooking camp, run by sixth grade English teacher Stacie Kropp and elementary science teacher Sue Henne.  "It was probably the first of all our camps to sell out," says Colt, noting that Cooking Camp and Day Camp were the two most popular this summer.  Parks & Recreation Clerk Maureen Muggeo adds, "I had nothing but positive comments."
