 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

Our nine year old son often plays with a friend from his class at the friend’s house. Our son tells us that this friend is his best friend. His parents place very few restrictions on him especially in the realm of videos and DVD’s. Our son is not allowed to watch violent or inappropriate movies, but there are no safeguards when he is at his friend’s house. Do we have the right to ask those parents to respect our wishes when our son is at their house?

Many thanks,

Concerned Parents

Dear CP,

Yes, you do have the right to ask the parents to honor your wishes and restrict certain videos and DVD’s, but that request pertains to your son only. While he is visiting, his friend might decide to watch a show that your son should not. That means one of two things: your son leaves the room and finds something to do until the show is over, or he leaves and heads for home.

Last Sunday video gamers came to the Cyberstation at the Pyramid Mall to play games for charity.  The event was hosted by Regal Cinemas to raise money for their Stars of Hope Foundation.  Five dollars bought you unlimited game play for two hours.  Regal's assistant manager and District Promotions Coordinator Emily English organized the event, making sure that flyers went up and being on hand to run the actual event.  Cyberstation's assistant manager David Jones was also on hand.

Every year the 5th Grade makes books about animals they study, the 6th grade creates new inventions and all the grades make art.  Last Tuesday it was all on display.

Inventions lined the library, with solutions to  all manner of problems.  Several students came up with new ways to feed their dogs.  One had a device for laughing at your best friend's unfunny jokes.  Another invented a way to keep guitar picks from falling off your fingers.  Kids were on hand to demonstrate their inventions, and families and fellow students enjoyed viewing them all.

posticon Dogs En Route From Bahamas

Ithaca... The Tompkins County SPCA is taking in four dogs all the way from the Bahamas. They will arrive at the Syracuse International Airport from Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island on Thursday night, May 25 at 9:28 pm (Delta Airlines Flight no. 1504). Rounded up during a disastrous canine distemper outbreak that struck the island nation during January and claimed the lives of uncounted hundreds of dogs, these four survivors were brought to the Humane Society of Grand Bahamas Island and vaccinated in time to be saved.

In February, Dr. Bridget Barry, Medical Director at the Tompkins County SPCA, answered a plea from veterinarians in Freeport to help cope with an unprecedented wave of distemper, a disease that is nearly always fatal to dogs and promises a slow and painful death. Because of her experience as an active member of V-MAT, the national Veterinary Medical Assistance team (a branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency), Dr. Barry was accustomed to animal related disasters and had already worked extensively in animal rescue and treatment in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf.

President Bush's prime-time speech was designed to divert attention away from the fact that his own budget has prevented enough border patrol agents to be deployed.

The National Intelligence Reform Act, signed Dec. 17th 2004, included the requirement to add 10,000 border patrol agents. Bush's 2006 budget only allocated enough money for 210 of them. Yet there was enough money to give tax breaks to the rich and the corporations who hire illegals.

Planned Restaurant Burn Goes Without a Hitch

Lansing's Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at the restaurant near Lansing Middle School Saturday morning at 6:30.  The restaurant most recently known as Lori's Place burned to the ground, leaving nothing more than part of a chimney and a pile of ashes.  But this was exactly what firemen wanted as they burned the structure in an early morning training exercise.  "I was really pleased with a little bit of training we got in the interior today," said Tom Dorward, who is in charge of training for the department.

Village of Lansing Mayor Donald Hartill says there will be two more weeks of mud and dust before contractors begin laying pavement on Triphammer Road.  When complete there will be seven lanes between Route 13 and the Pyramid and Cayuga Malls which will funnel into the malls and three lanes North of Pyramid Drive.  A bus stop is being constructed near the HSBC bank and sidewalks, bicycle paths, streetlights and foliage will finish the project.

Hartill noted in the Village Trustees meeting Monday that drainage will have to be raised before the asphalt can go down.  This had been done last year, but when NYSEG didn't move utilities on schedule drainage had to be lowered again for the Winter to prevent ice from forming on the road.  The Mayor estimates that added $150,000 to the project.

posticon SADD Accident Enactment Feels Real

Lansing High School, 5/17 --  Lansing High School students were in the gym for an assembly Wednesday afternoon when Junior Katie Bruno, covered with blood, came to the door screaming for help.  As she ran back to the scene of a car crash, the whole assembly followed her to the intersection of a High School parking lot and Ludlowville Road.  There they found two of their classmates, Laura Hover and Kayla Griffin, dead, with another, James Lauzun, trapped in his car.  Bruno, disoriented, was screaming and in shock as she realized Griffin was dead.  Hover's arm had been amputated in the crash, and was dripping blood.  As students watched the Lansing Fire Department and Tompkins County Sheriffs respond to the accident a MedEvac helicopter flew Lauzun away.  He died en route.  Drunk driver Andy Lockwood had the least serious injuries.  He was given a sobriety test and arrested.

The only part of the enactment that was not real was the victims, who were played by Lansing High School students.  Firemen put "DOAs" in body bags as Lansing Funeral Home staff prepare.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I have a very good friend at work. We usually confide to one another about work discussing what we like and don’t like about the office, co-workers, and management. Recently I told my friend how much I earned. He is up for his annual review with our executive director and might use the information to get a raise. Will this hurt me in any way?

Richard

Dear Richard,

There are some things you should not share with co-workers no matter how much you trust them, and your salary is one of them. If he does bring up your salary in his meeting with the executive director, he or she ought to remind him that such information is confidential and should not be mentioned for any negotiations, especially salary as there are other factors involved. Your decision to divulge your salary might be seen as unwise in the eyes of your executive director, but there should be no harm.

Ithaca-Tompkins Airport 05/13 -- Kids lined up for free airplane rides at East Hill Flying Club Saturday.  But they didn't just get to ride.  They also got their first flying lesson as they were taught a little about flying at five learning stations.  Kids aged 8 to 17 who completed the five stations and got their free ride received a certificate of completion for the day.  "We're just showing them the very basics," said the club's Chief Instructor David St. George.
