posticon 137 Year Ithaca Tradition, The Y Keeps Growing

YMCAYMCAThe YMCA in Lansing Village is a busy place. Associate Director Frank Towner says, "We service around 11,000 people here. About 8400 are members members, and then additional people who attend a program. Lansing, in demographics, is the largest group because we're right here. The City of Ithaca's a close second."

Mr. Towner laid out the history of the facility: "In 1844 the Y was founded by George Williams in England. Shortly after that, around 1856, it was brought to America. The original Y was the Young Mens Christian Association, bringing men together for Christian fellowship. Eventually that evolved into sports and fitness, because men wanted to do something. So today it's come to be known as a sports and fitness facility, family oriented.

If you happened into the Traditions & Beyond 2005 Quilt Show at the FIELD last weekend (10/01-10/02) you probably found Pat Costantini at the Quilters Corner booth. She was handing out fabric kits to make Christmas Stockings for Marines in Iraq. This is part of "Operation Santa USMC 2005," a program that sends a bit of home to marines at Christmas time.

A group that Ms. Costantini is involved with is responsible for the First Light Armor Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion, which is comprised of about 700 marines. Each platoon of about 30 soldiers will be sent a filled Christmas stocking for each Marine in the platoon. The package will include a small fold-up Christmas tree with decorations, a Christmas CD, Christmas Cards for each Marine, cookies, candy, and snacks, plus gifts that the platoon can share (board games, decks of cards, DVDs).

An invasion of quilts overcame The FIELD on East Shore Drive when the Tompkins County Quilters Guild held their biannual quilt show last weekend (10/2-10/3). Nearly 300 quilts were on display as well as soft sculpture, clothing and merchants in the "Traditions & Beyond 2005 Quilt Show." The show fulfills the guild's mission to promote quilting as an art and to teach about quilting and its history.

Russians holding Amreican flagsRussians holding Amreican flagsFor three weeks the Ithaca area was invaded by eleven Russian marketing directors. They were sponsored by three local Rotary Clubs, including Lansing's Ithaca Cayuga Rotary. The four businessmen and seven businesswomen, along with a facilitator and an interpreter, visited several local businesses to see how a variety of American companies do business and market their products and services.

The delegates came from all over Russia, from Saint Petersburg to Siberia. The visit was under the umbrella of the Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP), a San Francisco-based initiative that supports the development and stabilization of the Russian economy by bringing Russian business people to the US to learn managerial skills. Local families housed them, and businesses, including many in Lansing, welcomed them for special sessions in which American business and marketing practices were discussed.

Worship ColumnThe huge shade trees surrounding the circa 1904 West Groton-East Lansing Bible Church, 858 Cobb West, between Groton and Lansing, create a more serene setting than one will experience in the Fellowship Hall on the first and third Thursday of each month.

That's when woman of a certain maturity start gathering about 7 o'clock in the evening. They walk carefully, some using canes and others leaning on the arm of their long time friends. They don't even glance toward the big double doors or intricate stained glass windows at the front of the building. They barely take note of flowerbeds overflowing with hosta and impatiens in the lushness of fall bloom. These women are in a hurry to reach their destination - the fellowship hall at the back of the buildings where one of their number has already arrived, turned on the lights and spread out the work of the evening.

LUMC Rummage SaleLUMC Rummage SaleWhat it is: the Grandmother of ALL church rummage sales!

What it is not: not Rodeo Drive, not Saks Fifth Avenue, not even the bargain basement of a fine department store, but the quality and quantity are comparable. Both were enough to boggle the mind of newly arrived Pastor William Gottschalk-Fielding the first time he witnessed a Lansing United Methodist Church rummage sale, shortly after assuming the LUMC pulpit in July, 2003.

Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I was wondering what you think about gambling? I often play the lottery especially when it reaches into the millions and will bet on the World Series and the Super Bowl. In all, I spend somewhere from $500.00 to $1,000.00 each year on my “hobby.” My wife frowns on this activity, and wishes I would give up betting all together. We recently sat down and compared what she pays for hair care and trips to the spa against my gambling bets.

A new permanent Superintendent was appointed by the Lansing School Board in tonight's meeting (10/04) in the High School library.  The appointment of Dr. Mark S. Lewis was approved 6-1 in a special meeting convened with the sole agend item of voting on the appointment.  Board member Christine Iacobucci dissented, saying that her disagreement was no surprise to the Board or the candidate.

Board President Bonita Lindberg thanked all the stakeholders including Dr. Ellen O'Donnell, the members of the board,  teachers, administrators, staff, community and students who volunteered their time to be a part of the interview process.  In a prepared statement she said, "The Board is very excited about the skills and experience that Dr. Lewis is bringing to Lansing and is confident that the entire community will support him."

Dr. Lewis has nearly 30 years of experience in education.  He is currently the Superintendent of the Brewster school district.  Pending the drawing of a contract, he will begin on or before January 6.
