Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga announced the launch of our Health Coaching Program, funded through a grant by Care Compass Network. The goal of the program is to assist individuals in taking proactive steps to care for themselves and in developing a sense of control over their own health.

Program participants themselves will choose which personal health issues they will focus on. Examples of such issues include, but certainly aren’t limited to, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, COPD and asthma. The program will encourage preventative care and provide education, encouragement, and accountability.

posticon Dear Margaret - Who Am I?

dearmargaret I recently lost a very good friend because she thought I had designs on her husband. I readily admit that I am a flirt and always have been. My friend knows this. And yes, you could say that I flirted with her husband, but it was nothing sexual and it was always in good fun. I do not have romantic feelings for her husband by any means. My friend refuses to talk to me and has cut me out of her life. I'm devastated. I'm now questioning my behavior and am so conscious of how I act around men that I don't even feel like myself. How can I cope with the realization that how I act can be so misconstrued by others?

Myers Park

In the wake of the announcement that Steve Colt would be retiring and that the Town Board is considering reorganizing to create a Department of Public Works (DPW) some residents have asked town officials about the fate of the Recreation Department.  Supervisor Ed LaVigne has said that responsibility for the parks would likely move under a DPW umbrella, which some residents took to mean that the Rec Department would be a victim of the reorganization.  But LaVigne says that the Rec Department will remain intact.

"The Rec Department is not going anywhere," he said at the last Town Board meeting.  "If I could turn rumors into electricity we would never have these discussions, because human nature is that if you don't know the answer, let's fill it in with the worst case scenario.  So here is what the deal is: that Rec Department will ge going full steam ahead - that's not going to change."

The website of the Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management, has been updated with a fresh look and new tools designed to make finding information about recycling easy and convenient.

Visitors to the website will appreciate the new "Find My Recycling Day" tool on the home page. This new feature, powered by ReCollect Systems, allows residents to type in their address to display a customized calendar with all of their upcoming pickup dates. The tool also allows users to sign up to receive automated reminders via phone, text, or email; print a copy of their calendar; or embed their recycling schedule into the calendar app of their choice (including Google Calendar and iCal). Residents are also encouraged to sign up for service alerts so they can be notified about delays and cancellations due to weather or other changes in the recycling pickup schedule.

posticon Dear Margaret - Healthy and Unhappy

dearmargaret While I appreciate my girlfriend's desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and generally agree to go along with her next new thing, I'm growing a bit weary of her ever changing idea of what healthy even means. One day it's no gluten, the next day it's a frenzy to buy and use all things coconut oil. One day she's all about a paleo diet, the next its fat free. Once she decides a certain food is bad, she throws out all of that food, which annoys me because it's like throwing away money on her each and every whim of what constitutes healthy. To be honest, I don't think her ever changing idea of what's good and bad is healthy in itself. This whole thing is getting on my last nerve. Going out for dinner has become a source of irritation for me, what with her asking for variations on the stated menu. We are starting to argue about this more often. How can we come to some kind of resolution to this sticky situation?

posticon Hydrilla Eradication Success Story

Print Print

hydrilla Every summer since 2012, June and July were the months when businesses and residences around the south end of Cayuga Lake received notices that chemical treatments were starting soon, to continue the long-term eradication of hydrilla from Cayuga Inlet, Stewart Park near the mouth of Fall Creek, and just offshore in Cayuga Lake's southeastern corner. For six years, interns installed hundreds of stakes topped with yellow notices along the lake's edge and waterways. Not so in 2018!

The invasive aquatic plant hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) was first found by an eagle-eyed intern on the Floating Classroom (a program of Discover Cayuga Lake) in August 2011. A massive coordinated rapid response effort carried out by local and state agencies, researchers and community groups, revealed that 166 acres of Cayuga Inlet – Ithaca's premiere waterway – was infested with hydrilla.
