healthy Food

Single-parent families from Tompkins County will receive weekly bushels of fresh produce this summer in a program that will offer culinary support for parents pressed for time to cook.

Healthy Food for All, a nonprofit that makes fresh produce accessible to low-income families, will provide partial and full subsidies for single parents who want to receive shares from a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program at one of ten farms in Tompkins County. The CSA typically cost $600 for the season, which runs from June to November.

posticon Within Reach - Spring - Finally…

Within reachI have it on good authority that spring has finally arrived. While not sure that this prediction is 100% reliable, the last few days have been encouraging. The motorcycle is inspected and registered, flowering plants have been started or purchased, and I can go outside without a parka on.

Now that we have a few days of relative warmth in store, it's time to begin to wander about and find growing things. After such an impossibly dismal winter, growing things are sure to pick you up and give hope for the future – at least the immediate future…

posticon Carnival Returning To Lansing

Lansing Events Committee Carnival

On the heels of a successful carnival last year, the Lansing Events Committee is ramping up its efforts to make the carnival an annual event, as well as to become involved in more events that celebrate the Town of Lansing and its community and culture.  The group is poised to sign a contract that will bring the carnival back to Lansing Central Fire Station again this year.

"We're trying to have the carnival every year," says The Lansing Events Committee President Valerie McMillen. "We've gotten the approval from the Lansing Fire Commissioners.  We'll probably do it again in September 7th and 8th.  Playland Amusement Company (that provides the carnival rides, games, and booths) would like us to add a day to cover them in case of a rain date.  We're going to work on that and see how the fire department feels about it."

posticon Dear Margaret - Shunned

dearmargaret I've been dating a man for about a year now. We are both widowed with adult children. One of his daughters has warmly welcomed me, and the other goes out of her way to be openly rude and hurtful towards me. We both agree that marriage is not in our near future, but we very much enjoy each other's company under our current, exclusive arrangement. I don't know whether this daughter thinks I'm a gold digger, feels her father shouldn't be dating so soon, or has other issues I'm not aware of. We were all together for the first time last weekend, and her hostility towards me left me in tears. I don't know how to handle this. Both daughters live several miles away, so our gatherings will be infrequent. How can I handle this situation?

Hello! My name is Cassie! I am one of the longest-term resident, here at the SPCA. I am a very sweet companion cat, on my own terms. I prefer not to be picked up or petted on my rear end. The vets here have me on a diet and I am going to be looking awesome a few pounds lighter. I love sunny windows, bird watching, and pineapple yogurt! Please come meet me today, if I could be the only feline in your home!

Village Community Park

Village of Lansing voters will have an opportunity to name three parks next week.  After voting for two open Board of Trustees seats, they will also get to vote on how to name the parks, including a major new park near Warren Road.  Village Trustees approved the ballot Monday for next Tuesday's election

"We have three parks that we have an opportunity to name," Mayor Donald Hartill said Monday.  "We have the big park, which is the new one on Northwoods Drive.  There's another one that we rebuilt across from Dankert Park, and there's a pocket park on Craft Road and Leif's Way.  This is a way of naming these parks for people who have benefited the Village in one way or another."

posticon Dear Margaret - Forgiveness Beyond Reach

dearmargaret I've been struggling with the concept of forgiveness for a very long time. I get all kinds of advice from all kinds of people, none of which is very helpful. Some say you can forgive but not forget, but that doesn't seem like you've truly forgiven. Others say that it will just take time, but much time has gone by, and I'm still at the same place. Still others talk about forgiveness in terms of religion, which doesn't do it for me. I'm the one that is hurting. The one who offended me probably is living life free of hurt or guilt. Can you offer any advice on this subject?

Lee Rayburn

Lee Rayburn, host of WHCU's Morning Newswatch, tweeted Wednesday that his job has been eliminated.  His post was characteristically upbeat and gracious, with great praise for his colleagues at Cayuga Radio Group, and humble appreciation for the community and his opportunity to serve it.  He also posted on Facebook, where, less than 24 hours later 168 people had reacted, and 152 replied, mourning his loss to the community.  At Wednesday's Lansing Town Board meeting Tompkins County Legislator Mike Sigler paid tribute to Rayburn.

"It's really a huge loss.  I want to thank him personally for all the work he's done for the last six years," Sigler said. "He has everything on from Frank Towner at the Y to the Hangar Theatre, and all the local news.  I feel that's a giant loss to the community.  I really appreciate his work."
