posticon Greek Tragedy Rules Ithaca

ic_electra_120Electra, I said. Greek tragedy, I said. Do I really want to go to this?

I did, and you do too. Ithaca College Theatre's production of Euripides' Electra is powerful, compelling, and clear. Under Susannah Berryman's direction, the student actors and designers have created a Greek tragedy that speaks to us all.

The Atreus family puts the crazy in dysfunctional. Agamemnon, the dad, killed one of his daughters in return for favorable winds to carry him to Troy. Clytemnestra, the mom, killed her husband when he returned from Troy.

FOREVER AND EVER: Great artists will often break the rules the create something great, as Mr. Händel did in the "Hallelujah Chorus."  Breaking the rules can be one reason a work of art is great, but in this case, the rest of us should avoid redundancies and just say forever.

This reminds me that we sometimes hear patients at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired say for all eternity. This begs the question, What's half of eternity?

That's enough to think about at this point in time.

newroots_artshow_120In “Putting a Face on the Future,” New Roots Charter School student artists explore the human face through the art techniques of collage and photomontage, loosely based on the work of Romare Bearden. Taking an optimistic step forward regarding who they are now, and where they will be in the future, students were asked to construct a photomontage or collage of a face that represents them in the future. This optimism of the will may be expressed through color, texture, fragmented representations, pattern, or other means.

kitchen_front120Always his little brother's keeper, Ogun scratches out a living in his auto repair shop. His troublesome free spirited brother Oshoosi is fresh out of jail on parole. Can one brother succeed if the other fails? Can one be free if the other is imprisoned? Set in contemporary small-town rural Louisiana and infused with Yoruba mythology, The Brothers Size is a timeless story about two brothers whose hopes and dreams are pinned on each other. Hailed as "too good to be perfect" by the New York Times, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney is a brilliant new voice in American theatre. The Brothers Size will be performed at the Kitchen Theatre from October 27 through November 7, 2010.

hangar_facade120The Hangar Theatre is announced the next show in the CabarETC series, Love Makes The World Go ‘Round. CabarETC is the Hangar’s rendition of cabaret which includes a dynamic variety of Broadway, jazz, original, and rock music performed by New York City’s finest musical theatre talent and Hangar favorites.

The story begins with Ladies' Night at Henry Street, a piano bar in Manhattan's West Forties -- but someone forgot to tell the men, because the only customers tonight are three very different (and very talented) women, each searching for love.  Through the movie, theatre, and pop songs of Bob Merrill, they compare thoughts on men, relationships, and life... ultimately realizing that "People Who Need People Are The Luckiest People In The World."

posticon Smart Talk: First Started

FIRST STARTED: As a senior therapist at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, I wish to note the passing of one of the institute's mentors, Edwin Newman.  He was honored when we opened the Edwin Newman Clinic for Temporal Retentives, and we honor his memory in our work there.

Potential patients at this clinic have never started or begun anything.  They insist upon using redundancies like "when I first started," or "when I first began." Their vacation stories always begin with "When we first arrived..." They lovingly recall how they first met their spouses.  They even refer to those events as past memories.

Please help. In memory of Edwin Newman, please contribute to his clinic through the newspaper you're reading.  A language is a terrible thing to waste.

FIRST OF ALL: Weekends at the Fowler Lounge, the staff of the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired can get sarcastic after a schooner or two of stout.  After all, we've spent the week hearing nucular and try and.

"First of all!?" roars Dr. Parley Speake.  "As opposed to the first of just a few?"

"Yes," I reply.  "It's as redundant as foreign imports."

Last week, Dr. Shirley Glibb threw her drink into the face of a man whose come-on line was, "I want you and me to be the last of all the people in this place."

At least the poor guy didn't say you and I, but Shirley had had a really bad day.
