crs_movinglandscapes120The annual Moving Landscapes series continues the CRS Barn Studio tradition of bringing innovative dance and music partnerships to Ithaca audiences. This year's event will proudly showcase Ithaca talent, featuring live music and a variety of new work by dance artists who have been working together consistently throughout the summer. Choreographers include Jeanne Goddard, Lisa Bertuzzi, and Karen Koyanagi, in collaboration with dancers Jessica Gaby, Risa Lieberwitz, Yvette Rubio, and Lauren Schler. Tandemonium Yoga Dance and Music Collective will also perform.

Moving Landscapes V includes both outdoor and indoor explorations of space, time, and energy as images are captured and communicated through movement. Beginning with an outdoor prologue performed in the adjacent gardens, with a panoramic view of Cayuga Lake as a backdrop, choreographed pieces will alternate with music and dance improvisations, some of which will involve audience members in a lively creative process. This is a rare opportunity to see choreographic work in all stages of development and to observe dance-making in action, in an informal setting.

posticon Smart Talk - Genetic Mutation

by Dr. Amelia Raitt Payne, MD

GENETIC MUTATION: As the staff physician at the Center for English as a First Language, I may get even more bothered by this redundancy than the language therapists.

Surely, anyone with more thinking power than a crustacean can see that genetic mutation is redundant, right? It's as silly as saying oral mouth disease. A student at Wesson High, here in Underbelly, Texas, showed me a science book illustration that labeled a core as the central core, so genetic mutation isn't the only scientific redundancy out there. I've even heard experimental laboratory.

Maybe some don't realize that a mutation is genetic by definition: Mutations occur due to genetic irregularities, which happen much more often than most people realize.

crs_hg"Nibble, nibble, mousie, who's nibbling at my housie?" Does this familiar question conjure up images of a delicious, candy-covered house...and the evil witch who lurks inside? Revisit this classic story in a lively new one-hour production of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" at the CRS Barn Studio in Lansing. Performance dates are Friday and Saturday, August 10 and 11 at 7:00pm and Sunday, August 12 at 4:00pm.

This beloved opera recounts the tale of two small children who get lost in the woods, find a magical gingerbread house, and conquer an evil witch to set their friends free and reunite with their parents. The CRS Barn Studio's updated and compact adaptation is beautifully sung, in a new translation by Gary Race, and action packed, with colorful sets and beautiful dancing.

posticon Smart Talk - Extended Period of Time

by Dr. Parley Speake

EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME: At the Center for English as a First Language, where we help Americans who can't use their own language fluently, we call this polysyllabificationitis. Our founder, an anonymous educator, designed the name to be an example of the illness. This disorder has patients believing that more syllables make one sound smarter.

Maybe we should call it Stuffed Shirt Syndrome.

By extended period of time, doesn't the speaker or writer mean long time? Then say so and get on with it. Period of time is redundant, anyway; you could just as well say long period, but that's two syllables longer that long time, so it's your second choice. And saying extended instead of long is like saying laceration when it's a cut. In other words, get over yourself.

Here's a Big Lesson: Simple English is better English. Words are tools much like those of a mechanic. Having and knowing how to use a coil spring depressor is great when you need it, but 99% of the time, you work with screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches. And 99% of the time, the best speakers and writers use the simplest words possible.

That's been true for a long time.

hangar_fullgallopThree time Tony nominee Dee Hoty makes her Hangar Theatre debut in Full Gallop, an intimate slice-of-life portrait of Vogue editor and American fashion icon Diana Vreeland, who championed "the little black dress", the bikini, and Twiggy. Written by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson, Full Gallop celebrates the remarkable woman who was the heart of American style for five decades. According to the New York Daily News, "Full Gallop is, as Vreeland herself might have said, divine, divine, divine!" Full Gallop plays August 2-11.

"You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It's a way of life. Without it, you're nobody." Diana Vreeland began as a columnist for Harper's BAZAAR in 1936, eventually becoming the magazine's fashion editor. In 1962, she became the editor-in-chief of Vogue, where she was well known for endorsing what was most fashion forward. Photographer Richard Avedon called her 'the only genius fashion editor.'

posticon Smart Talk - Unique and Unusual

by Dr. "Gabby" Macron

UNIQUE AND UNUSUAL: Luke Johnson, mayor of Underbelly, Texas, appeared on local TV one evening to tout a new visitors' center. "We wann-ed something unique and unusual," he proclaimed, indicating a disquieting poster of what looked as if an armadillo the size of his ego had eaten the Fluff ‘n' Puff hair salon. As big as a blimp, the dull silvery creature seemed to crouch behind the Main Street sidewalk like a fever dream of a giant possum in a suit of armor.

"Now that's unique an' unusual," Mayor Johnson repeated. That there's gonna be our visitation cenner. Architeck over to Bedspring Tech got ‘er all designed."

You should have heard the angry roar in the Fowler Lounge over at the Center for English as a First Language. We therapists weren't throwing pretzels at the TV because of an ugly building plan. We raged at unique and unusual. Some of us had spent hours that very day treating patients who thought unique, which means one of a kind, or the only, could be modified with very, so, highly, or any other adverb.

Now to hear unique and unusual - well, it made a therapist wonder whether growing pineapples in Alaska might be easier.

Let's be clear: Nothing can be both unique and unusual. That's like saying parallel converging lines. Unusual means somewhat rare and implies that some others exist. If it's unique, no others exist. The Hope Diamond is unique. For a long time, we were told that each snowflake is unique. Apparently, each is unusual at best.

But your child is unique. Just like everybody else's.
