rooney

Hi! My name is Rooney, and I am such a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, always wanting to be the life of the party with my constantly wagging tail. I arrived at the shelter after being found as a stray in Danby, but sadly, no one came to claim me. I probably haven’t had much experience living in a home because when I first came in, I was not quite so sure about going through doorways and I can get a bit confused with new floor surfaces. But, I’m so eager to please and would love to get to know your home! At the shelter, I have been great with other dogs and may do well with another canine in the home to be a role model for me. I haven’t been to a manners class yet, so I should go to a home with school-aged children or older. Come in and meet me today - you'll fall in love with my goofy self and won’t be able to resist taking me home!

cubhawk_120On Saturday 28th September Lansing Pack 48 Cub Scouts met in Myer’s Park for their opening pack meeting of the school year.  The highlight of the meeting was a visit from I’olani, a four-year old red-tailed hawk, with her keeper Peter Harrity of Lime Hollow Nature Center in Cortland.  Twenty-four Cub Scouts (boys ranging from 1st to 5th grade) plus their leaders, siblings and parents enjoyed a fascinating presentation on a most beautiful fall day.

The Cubs learned about I’olani’s history, her living conditions, her diet and how she hunts during the winter months with Harrity.  The boys were able to watch her eat a meal, two white mice that she devoured hungrily.

wf2013_120The glow could be seen for miles away, up and down Cayuga Lake Friday as the Finger Lakes Chapter 377 of the Vietnam Veterans of America hosted its 23rd watchfire on POW/MIA Remembrance Day.  Cornell ROTC cadets and Chapters 704 of Auburn, Sydney Camp 41 Sons of Union Veterans were among the past, present and future service men and women to attend the symbolic event in the hopes that the missing in action will be able to find their way home.

"The watchfire has been a tool of the military for centuries," explained organizer Harvey Baker.  "When soldiers were separated during battle they were able to find their own troops because of the fires that were lit at night to guide them home.  There are 1,645 Americans that are listed as missing in action from the Viet Nam war.  When we started these events 23 years ago there were over 2,700.  Of the known missing in action from the Viet Nam war are 108 from New York State."

allinger_walk120In five days of 'Walkin’ the Country' 103.7 QCountry’s Chris Allinger has raised more than $26,000. For the second year, Q Country morning host, Chris Allinger strapped on his backpack to walk for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s BackPack Program™.  From September 9th-13th Chris Allinger walked to every town in Tompkins County raising funds for the program that helps feed children at risk of hunger on weekends and holidays during the school year.

“I couldn’t be happier with the result.  People got the message that there are children going hungry right here in our County,” said Allinger. “We went out and asked for $3.00 to feed a child for a weekend.  Look what happens when a community comes together.”

spca_autumnThe SPCA of Tompkins County is asking for help from the Collegetown community in capturing a scared stray young female boxer mix who has been roaming the neighborhood for 8 weeks.

“This dog, who we are calling Autumn was one of four dogs that escaped from an individual who wanted to turn all four over to the SPCA," SPCA Executive Director Jim Bouderau says. "We were able to catch three of them, pictured here, all of whom since have been adopted by new caring guardians.”

stgeorge_120 The Reformed Orthodox Christian Church celebrated its first anniversary Sunday with a lunch at Saint George Orthodox Church on Myers Heights.  The congregation had a lot to celebrate.  After 50 years with no assigned priest, the The Reformed Orthodox Christian Church reopened the historic church for regular Sunday services just over a year ago.  Priest Matthew Binkewicz and parishioners have done a lot of work on the building since then, and today it stands as a restored gem of Lansing's past and present.

posticon LUMC Celebrates 50th Anniversary

lumc_120Lansing United Methodist Church (LUMC) will celebrate its 50th anniversary with several events throughout the 2013-14 church calendars. Bishop Mark Webb will be preaching Sunday, October 13 to start a year full of events to recognize the founding of the church.

In October of 1963 LUMC was founded—accomplished by the 'blood, sweat and tears' (and yes, money) of a visionary group of fellow Christians.  Before that there had been five local churches in the area that were each struggling financially and facing major renovations. These Founders (a number of whom still sit in LUMC’s pews on Sundays) were able to 'come together and dream big,' creating a vibrant congregation and spacious church building.

posticon Lansing Scouts Cycle Around Vermont

scoutsvermont_120Earlier this year, Troop 48 of Lansing were preparing for a week-long bike trip in Vermont. We learnt about the main components of a bike, and what to do and how to deal with turn signals, flat tires, etc.  We started training rides in April and built up from 10 miles to 38 miles.

It was Monday, the 1st of July. Twelve scouts and seven adults were in the group.   All of our practicing back at Lansing had lead up to this. <insert cheesy motivational music> We all mounted our bikes as we sped off into the Vermont wilderness where we cycled a loop of 25 miles near Kettle Pond State Park.  We had mild weather with lots of forestry to look at, but two punctures, one broken derailleur and a group that got lost.  The rain started as it got dark, but that didn’t stop us having smores over the fire.

posticon Republican Barbecue Introduces Lansing Candidates

siglersign120Lansing Republicans were smokin'!  At least the barbecue was smoking at Myers Park Sunday where Local Republicans held a 'Meet The Candidates' barbecue.  All three Lansing candidates were present to tell voters about their campaigns in a lazy Sunday afternoon atmosphere.  Also present was Tompkins County Republican Committee Chairman Chairman Jamie Drader.  Drader said his Lansing candidates are on the right side of major current issues in the town.

"All three candidates were against the sewer project," Drader says.  "They are all for repowering Cayuga Power Plant because it's going to save jobs.  I think we have a great slate of candidates here.  Doug Dake, Robert Cree, Mike Sigler will all three do a great job.  They really listen to the people of Lansing.  That's their biggest plus."

zoe

Hi! My name is Zoe! I'm an oldie-but-a-goodie 10 year old beautiful girl! I was brought to the SPCA when my owner died and other family members were unable to care for me. In my first home, my owner noticed that I love to spend lots of time on windowsills, watching the world outside. I don't care to be picked up, but I like to have my chest, neck, and head pet. I think I would be happiest in a home without children, where I have understanding people to provide just the right amount of attention, care, entertaining window views, and cozy sleeping quarters. Please consider me!
