posticon Mardi Gras Comes to Lansing

Image If you missed the party that reopened the historic Rogue's Harbor Inn ballroom in December, you'll have another chance when the Inn hosts a Mardi Gras party on February 21st.  You'll get to try out traditional Carnival mixed drinks, listen to live jazz, and enjoy appetizers and deserts from Venice, Rio, Trinadad, and New Orleans.  And, perhaps, be a bit of a rogue.

"We're known to have a little fun here," says Rogue's Harbor Inn Event Coordinator Sandra Pierzinski.  "We have a reputation to uphold!  We're just trying to chase away the winter blahs and the clouds and the cold and dreariness.  We figured we'd bring a little sunshine and some rhythms and cadences from a bit further south."

ImageLast Saturday, January 24th, 19 students from Lansing Middle School and 16 students from Lansing High School took part in the All-County Choral Festival at Groton High School. These students were joined by more than 200 students from seven other area middle schools and six other high schools to form two choral groups. These two groups met together for the first time Friday afternoon. Over the course of Friday and Saturday, the groups practiced approximately nine hours before performing for a packed auditorium.

The Middle School Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Anthony Maiese, performed five pieces including Siyahamba, an African folk song, and Bashana Haba'ah, by John Leavitt. The High School Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Joseph Stillitano, performed four pieces including Lacrymosa (from "Requiem") by Mozart, and Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Paul Simon/arr. ImageThe black bomber pulls ahead by a fraction of an inch.  The pink jalopy is close behind, but the white streak is pulling ahead.  The crowd goes wild as the lead car wins in a photo finish, confirmed by computer sensors at the finish line as the cars come to a screeching halt.  Is it Watkins Glen?  Nope, it was the Pack 48 Cub Scouts ' Pinewood Derby last Saturday.

"They start out with just a pine block of wood," says Lansing Cub Scouts Treasurer Brenda Powers.  "They can cut them, they can paint them, they put the wheels on them.  They can't weigh more than five ounces."

posticon Lansing Library: Another Successful Year

Print Print

ImageDuring these tough economic times library card registration is at an all-time high, according to the American Library Association, and USA Weekend magazine calls public libraries with all their free services, a dynamite money saver. Lansing Community Library (LCL) is improving its services to help patrons get even more entertainment and education from your local library.

Year 2008 was busy and momentous for Lansing Library (LCL).  Our faithful desk volunteers staffed the circulation desk week after week, skillfully serving our nearly 2850 library patrons. Behind the scenes were many other volunteers: people processing books and materials, financial bookkeeping, and buildings and grounds maintenance, as well as the library governing bodies (elected Trustees and the Friends of LCL). These dedicated people, many of whom have worked to build the library since its inception almost 10 years ago, continued their varied, time-consuming jobs that are often not seen by library patrons or the public. A conservative estimate puts the number of volunteer hours donated by many Lansing people to LCL at 550 per month.

According to Maureen Murphy, Director of Charter Accountability for the Charter Schools Institute, the school's charter will take effect in 30 days.

Board Chair Jason Hamilton acknowledged that these are challenging economic times and that state budget cuts will impact all schools in New York State. However, this is the time to make an investment in our educational infrastructure to prepare our children for a changing economy, he said.

Catching the train.  We were up at 4:30 a.m. and to the train by 5:30.  We got on at New Carrollton, the terminus of the orange line, about 10 minutes from our friends in Bowie, and there was a mob.  We encountered a line probably 1/4 of a mile long.  But it moved along steadily and we were on the train on the way to DC soon.  Cold - I opened my hand warmers in this line.
