ImageEvery year from September through October strange figures appear at Cayuga Landscape on North Triphammer Road. They range from grave robbers to a witch to cowboys, tree shoppers and a man walking his dog. The scarecrows are the brainchildren of the Garden Center staff, especially Cattie Arndt, Les Morrison and Cathy Glasheen.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I was wondering how far one should go to protect one’s employer. Recently, my boss asked me to destroy some emails he sent me concerning an investigation at our company. Apparently, he has been under suspicion about financial irregularities. Although there are no specific numbers mentioned, the emails are quite explicit, almost a confession of sorts. According to some in the company, he most likely will be fired by the CEO and may be under investigation for embezzlement.

I feel quite a bit of loyalty to him since he was influential in getting me hired over several other equally qualified candidates for the job. I know I should not destroy the emails, but he is a very close friend. How far should loyalty extend?

Sincerely,

William

4th Graders at the School Board Meeting4th Graders at the School Board MeetingTen fourth graders attended the October 17 Lansing School Board Meeting to tell the Board about their experience traveling back in time. They and their classes experienced an authentic historical day in the Eight Square School House on Warren Road in Dryden, part of the DeWitt Historical Society's Living History program. Teachers Kate Bevington and Lisa Kledzik helped them present a PowerPoint presentation with pictures from the trip, while the students narrated.

Lansing students visited the school house to learn first hand about what it was like for kids their age to go to school in Tompkins County over a hundred and fifty years ago. Students had to dress the part, wearing long dresses, shirts with collars, bonnets, suspenders, straw hats, boots and overalls. The presenters wore their costumes to the School Board meeting as well.

posticon Lansing Author Challenges Conventional Diet Wisdom

Anyone can write a diet book. Come up with a crazy theory, get yourself a guest slot on Oprah, and schedule as many book signings as possible. It is rare that a diet craze comes from a lifetime of research. But that is just where Lansing's Dr. Colin Campbell's book has come from.

Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm, so it was natural that his early research would be on how to promote better health by eating more milk, meat and eggs. Later he studied the reason Filipino children were developing liver cancer. He discovered that those whose diets were highest in protein were most likely to get it. This let to studies of which proteins were harmful. "Animal based protein in the form of casein turns out to be one of the most relevant carcinogens that we consume," says Dr. Campbell.

posticon Fall Family Weekend Draws Crowds

Where can you help name a baby alpaca, learn about wine making and taste up to 12 varieties, meet a clown, listen to stories and pet a baby goat in one day? Last weekend (10/8-9) three local businesses got together to host a Fall Family Weekend. Events took place simultaneously at Bakers' Acres, King Freey Winery and Indian Chimney Farm.

The event was planned so that you could go to all three within one day, or spread out the events over the weekend. Rain marred the events, but people did turn out anyway. The rain affected the winery the least, because their event was largely indoors. Indian Chimney Farm reported about 600 people came to visit.

Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

You seem to know a lot about numerous topics. Perhaps you might be able to shed some light on my predicament. I am a 30 something guy with an average income. My hobbies and interests center on the computer especially monitoring my blog. In recent weeks, I have been spending a lot of time instant messaging a 30 something, single woman who also has a blog.

I think I would like to ask her out on a date, but I'm not sure how to go about it. My last real date was nearly two years ago, and I feel somewhat unsure of the right approach. Is it proper to email an invitation or should I get a phone number and call her?

Many thanks,

MJ

The Lansing Board of Education announced they have selected C&S Design Build, Inc. to act as construction manager on the proposed capital improvement plan. C&S provides pre-referendum services, helping to define the nuts and bolts aspects of the project so voters know what they are voting to approve, as well as project management for government agency construction projects. Jim Slavetskas, who has acted as liaison on earlier construction and maintenance programs for the Board will continue in that role on this project.

C&S's Joe Delaney made a presentation to the Board at their last regular meeting, explaining the services his company offers. He told the board, "We use our experience to get the project done on budget and on time."
