posticon Bed & Sofa Opens Kitchen Season

kitchen_front120The Kitchen Theatre Company will begin the New Year with a romantic love-triangle set to music in Bed & Sofa , a silent movie opera by Polly Pen and Laurence Klavan. When a young couple takes in a boarder, the duet becomes a trio, igniting passion and starting conflict. Who sleeps in the bed and who sleeps on the sofa? Bed & Sofa begins previews January 19, 20, and 21. Opening Night is January 22, and then continues through February 6, 2011. Bed & Sofa is recommended for ages 16 and up.

The game of musical bed and sofa takes place in 1926 Soviet Moscow. Times are hard in Stalinist Russia and everyone is a cog in the wheel. Ludmilla, (Erica Steinhagen), keeps house but wishes for more. Her husband Kolya (David Neal), a construction manager, accepts the status quo. When Kolya meets an old army buddy, Volodya (Patrick Oliver Jones), who has been displaced by the Moscow housing shortage, Kolya offers him the sofa in their cramped flat. In their military days, Kolya and Volodya shared a similar life philosophy. Now Kolya is content, while Volodya is restless and unsatisfied. Bed & Sofa explores the paths imposed on us and the bravery required to forge our own way.

by Dr. Molto Breve

I GO; SHE GOES: At the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, speakers who say goes instead of says are diagnosed as having cerebroporosis and given the same treatment as patients who say like at least once per sentence.

Regarding go, our staff psychologist, Viva Palaver, tells us that misuse of go and like may indicate retarded development.  She says may never have outgrown the baby-talk way of saying, "Doggy goes bow-wow!"  She also notes the contemporaneous trend in grown men dressing like toddlers, in ball caps, tee-shirts, oversize shorts, and sneakers.  Dr. Palaver may be on to something.

Regardless of her theory, however, we still treat this disorder as cerebroporosis, and our dedicated unit in the William Safire Center has been very busy.

IN SIDE CAR: Compounding words correctly makes a big difference.  After work at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, my colleague Dr. Saber S. Poder couldn't wait to show me what she had bought for her car.  A pair of deer whistles.  Well, of course, they weren't called deer whistles.  Oh, no.  Animal Saver System, if you please.

I enjoyed that, but Dot directed me to a line father down on the package:  "Animals in side car are not affected."

We laughed for days as we advanced new theories as to possible meanings.

theater_review120If you don't like sweets, Santaland Diaries is your perfect holiday confection.

The play, by David Sedaris, chronicles his experience as an elf at Macy's Santaland. Sedaris debuted his Diaries on National Public Radio in 1992, and Joe Mantello adapted it into a one-man play in 1996.

This is not a children's show. Bring the kids to see the Nutcracker, or A Christmas Carol. Then find child care, have a hot toddy or a martini, and come to see Santaland Diaries.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: My colleague Dr. Will S. Sert had had a hard week here at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired.  Ten treatments for nucular. Twenty-three for one less.

That Friday night, after tipping a tankard in the Fowler Lounge, he exploded.  "And what's this, ‘Enclosed is a copy for your information'?" he roared.  Why the [bleep] else would you enclose it!?"

We sympathized and tried to calm him down, but he was on a roll.  "Beginning anything with For your information simply says ‘Duh.' And F.Y.I.! Arghh!  Save me from cute stupidity!"

Actually, Will is a really sweet guy.

pfp_ps120I thought I'd take this time and show you a few of the stages photos take in their life, from being taken, almost thrown away, played with, modified and eventually turned into a work of art.

Have you ever heard someone say "...but sure, look at the camera he has. I can't take photos like that with MY camera...."  I respectfully respond, "Horse Hockey".
