Tonight, July 3, 2009 will be one of the biggest arts nights of the year in downtown Ithaca, with the kick off of the 2009 Art in the Heart of the City Program, First Fridays Gallery Night, and the kick-off of the To-Let Art Program.
All three events are free and open to the public. The To-Let Art Program begins at 4:00 p.m. at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Ithaca Commons, while eight participating galleries will host open houses from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and the 2009 Art in the Heart of the City kick-off reception and tour will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons Amphitheater, with several of the artists scheduled to attend.
If I start by saying this is a heartwarming story of love and redemption you might stop reading. That would be a shame, because Pixar hit another one out of the park with what I would say is their best movie yet. 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen wants to fulfill his lifelong dream of seeing South America. He ties thousands of balloons to his house and begins the journey. He soon finds a stowaway, Wilderness Explorer named Russell.
J.J. Abrams vision of Star Trek takes liberties with the classic series' well loved story, but this movie is so packed with action you barely have time to notice. Abrams takes the Starship Enyterprise along an alternative time line, which is supposed to account for the discrepencies. Without printing spoilers I will say that one difference in particular is, given the more than 45 years of Star Trek lore, is a bit jarring to anyone who has seen even a few of the previous offerings.
COCONSPIRATOR: Those of us on the staff of the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired who took Latin once upon a time feel very superior, linguistically speaking. But we try to treat the poorly educated majority with courtesy and respect.
We see in a flash that co-, con-, and com- are all prefixes that mean something like with, or together. And without looking it up, we can see that to conspire means literally to breathe together, or to with someone else. To coconspire means to scheme together with someone else. Why do we need together in there? Do we actually think we could do something with someone else separately?
Whenever a scandal breaks in Washington, we rediscover that our government does indeed hire the handicapped. The guilty are morally handicapped, while the reporters and lawyers are linguistically handicapped, or sometimes both. We must listen to coconspirator endlessly, even though conspirators are those who plot together.
The Tompkins County Public Library has announced the July opening of two extraordinary art exhibits.
A Senior Summer, curated by Sue Kilgore and Mary Schuler, and dedicated to Germaine Colvin, will be on display throughout the Library from July 6 through July 30, and The Original Doll as Art 2009, presented by the Ithaca Doll Artists, will be displayed in the Avenue of the Friends throughout the month of July.
The imaginative and magically fun tale of Snow White comes to the Hangar stage June 25 though 27 and July 2 through 4, the second production in the Hangar’s summer Kiddstuff Season. Audiences of all ages will fall in love with Marjorie Sokoloff’s fresh adaptation of the classic children’s story.
What if you found out that everything you’d heard about Snow White had been a lie? Get the truth—from the witch’s perspective—about what really happened! Join Snow White, the seven dwarves, a tongue-tied prince, a sassy mirror, and a dancing chicken in this in a tale about beauty, friendship, and happily-ever-afters with a twist.
Local favorites The Burns Sisters, Johnny Russo, Hubcap and Radio London are among the artists scheduled to perform at the 2009 M and T Bank Downtown Ithaca Summer Concert Series.
Sixteen concerts are planned for this year’s series, which kicks off tonight with a performance by the Ithaca Concert Band at the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Ithaca Commons. All of the concerts are free and open to the public and will take place on Thursday nights at either the Bernie Milton Pavilion or Aurora Street Pavilion, except as noted below. Each concert begins at 6:00 p.m., except for the performances by the Ithaca Concert Band, which will begin at 7:00 p.m in Bank Alley, and Dan Pellitier, whose concert begins at 6:30 p.m.
