Ithaca, NY —The award-winning documentary The Witness, produced by James LaVeck and directed by Jenny Stein of Tribe of Heart, will be shown at the Tompkins Trust Company Institute for Humane Education at the Tompkins County SPCA on Friday, May 12th at 7:30pm. Mr. LaVeck and Ms. Stein will be joined by the film’s subject, animal welfare pioneer Eddie Lama, to introduce the film and field questions after its conclusion. Following the event, a reception will be held at the TC SPCA Pet Adoption Center main lobby.

The film tells the inspiring story of tough construction contractor turned animal rescuer Eddie Lama. A film festival favorite, The Witness has won seven Best Documentary awards and one Best of Festival award. Los Angeles Times columnist Howard Rosenberg wrote, “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important and persuasive film about animals ever made.”

ImageWith Triphammer Road torn up you would expect shoppers to avoid the malls.  Pyramid Mall's Marketing Director Linn Redder sees the road construction as a challenge.  "I always say, 'You can always pull a positive from a negative,'" she says.  "Yes, it's going to be an inconvenience for a lot of people.  Will it stop our shoppers?  No.  Will it make them think twice about coming to the mall?  Yes, but we're just going to have to give them more reason to get here.  It will be difficult for a while, but we'll all get used to it."

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I recently purchased several combination heating/air conditioning units from a national hardware store in Ithaca. The purchase price included installation by one of their subcontractors. I felt really good about the whole process and went home to await the arrival of the workmen and the new units.

I’m not sure how they determine who works for them, but the team that installed my units behaved a lot like Abbot and Costello. Every move they made was a comedy of errors, but I wasn’t laughing. From the scratches on my hardwood floors to the cracks on the newly plastered walls, my house now resembles a physical relief map of the Cayuga Lake drainage basin.

The new addition to the Lansing Community Library Center (LCLC) building began this Monday.   McPherson Builders started moving in equipment on May 1 and hope to finish the addition sometime in October 2006. The new addition will help make the library part of the “Lansing Town Square”. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, foundations, individuals, and the State of New York, volunteers for the LCLC capital campaign have raised most the money needed to pay for the construction and hope to finish the financial campaign with a community fund-raising celebration this summer in August.

posticon Memorial Trees are Win-Win

Print Print

With most of the trees the of the same kind and age, Park Superintendent Steve Colt is concerned that one natural disaster could mean no trees in Lansing's parks and fields.  That is why the Town has instituted a policy of planing new trees every year.  "I've had several experts come into Myers Park," says Colt.  One of the concerns is the aging canopy in Myers Park, coupled with the obvious storm damage we've had over the past five to six years.  Most of the trees are cottonwoods.  They are all roughly the same age.  Every year or so a nasty storm rolls through and does significant damage."

This planting is near the entry of Myers Park

Individuals are also helping put new trees into the parks.  " I am excited about the opportunity for people to designate memorial trees in the parks," Colt says.  "We make the suggestion of planting a tree and they love the idea.  It memorializes their lost family member and it helps refoliate the park."  Colt says that people are starting to plant memorial trees, but that he would like more people to know it is an option.

 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I went to listen to some bands play over the weekend at a local bar. While I was there, someone smashed the passenger window of my car and stole my purse. I discovered this near the end of the performance. I was quite upset about the whole incident, so I immediately phoned my husband to tell him what had happened. To my surprise, he became very annoyed with me for having left my purse in the car. I realize I should have locked it in the trunk or tucked it under the seat, but I think my husband’s reaction was a bit harsh? Can you give me some tips as to how I can speak with him about his reaction?

Many thanks,

Ann Marie
